Folding Beijing

My BFA thesis is an illustrated adaptation of the award-winning Chinese science fiction Folding Beijing. The story reimagines a dystopian future Beijing from the perspective of a marginalized waste worker. While more and more skyscrapers rising up in urban China, millions of migrant workers struggle to live on the outskirts of the city. This tension between development and inequality is translated into a visual juxtaposition of digital and analogue media. The texture in this book is handmade with ordinary trash materials, such as bubble wrap and plastic bags, in response to the character’s identity as a waste worker. By unfolding the stories of these marginalized populations, I wish my book could bring a new perception to social issues in today’s China.
